Sacred Heart Mission

Every day hundreds of people who are homeless or living in poverty, come to the Sacred Heart Mission (SHM) in St Kilda seeking food, shelter, care and support. But that’s just the beginning. SHM works with people to overcome challenging issues and reconnect them with the community. Sometimes this can take years, but the Mission is there each step of the way.

Our services include a free, hot lunch to 600 people every day of the year, housing assistance, counselling, food parcels, emergency financial support and drug and alcohol support. The Mission also operates a clinic, sports and recreation program, mental health unit, three aged care hostels, crisis accommodation for women, three Op shops and a 64-bed rooming house.  But we need your support. Life Goes On

A key message from St Kilda director, Nathan Burke:

A serious illness changes everything. Confronted with a serious illness, most people don’t know who to talk to, what to say or how to talk to others. Family members, friends and colleagues generally don’t want to further the burden of grief, and so also don’t know how to react, what to say or who to speak with.

Those diagnosed with a terminal illness (or are close to someone with a terminal illness) often believe they can cope with the pressures – but this is true for less than half the population. And the issues they face are pretty much the same, whether the illness is cancer, heart disease, MS, stroke, Parkinsons or motor neuron disease.

Life Goes On is a unique organisation that provides a place, a point of contact, a source of advice and strength to patients, families, friends and workmates. Life Goes On is a not for profit organisation that helps people get more out of life despite their illness. They do this through their confidential 24 hour 7days a week national telephone counselling service and on the web at http://www.lifegoeson.org.au

To become a Life Goes On counsellor, it a prerequisite that people must have either survived or cared for someone with a life-threatening or serious illness. They are then interviewed and, if successful, go through a 90-hour training program. Upon successfully graduating, counsellors work from home on a roster basis for an average of 3 hours per week. Through regular debriefing and supervision and ongoing training on a monthly basis, Life Goes On ensures it meets the personal needs of its counsellors as well as ensuring it maintains a high quality service.

It is my hope that you and your club and Life Goes On share a great passion for supporting patients, friends and family faced with a serious illness – as well as those providing them with medical help.

I would like to meet with you to discuss how you can be part of a plan to help raise awareness of the wonderful service that Life Goes On provides.
