The club’s faith in the veteran big man was rewarded in 2009 as Gardiner dusted off his injury concerns to play 20 games and establish himself as the club’s No. 1 ruckman. The former Eagle had 410 hit-outs, giving his on-ballers plenty of supply, and was ranked in the Saints’ top five for contested marks. The best of those came against Geelong in the last minute in round 14, from which he kicked the game-winning goal – one of four for the day on his way to winning three Brownlow votes.

Draft history: 1996 National AFL Draft compensatory priority selection (West Coast) No. 1 overall traded by Port Adelaide for Ian Downsborough; 2006 NAB AFL Draft traded by West Coast for No. 43 (Tim Houlihan).
