ST KILDA’S Clint Jones says the extra sting in the Saints tackling during their NAB Cup campaign is all down to martial arts, or jujitsu in fact. The playing group has been doing sessions with John Donohue, a martial arts expert who has also done work with Melbourne Storm.

“We’ve done a lot of wrestling and grappling (with John),” Jones says.

“They were pretty full-on sessions… it’s been one of the big features of our pre-season.”

And while a solid pre-season has yielded a place in the NAB Cup Grand Final this Saturday night against Adelaide, Jones is in no doubt as to the team’s main objectives.

“Our main priority going into the game is managing players so we stay injury free and work and develop the style of play we want to play,” he said.

“Also it’s a chance for guys like me who haven’t played as many games, to get a taste of what AFL footy is really about. If we were to win it, it would be a great feeling and a good achievement and give us confidence going into round one. We’d love to win but it is all about round one.”

The Saints’ new style under Ross Lyon is a recurring theme when the playing group talks football. For Jones, the NAB Cup is the perfect opportunity for him to practice executing the game plan that Lyon has introduced since his arrival at Moorabbin.

“Getting the chance to be out there and play is the best chance to learn the game style that Ross and the coaches want us to play,” Jones said. “Once you’re out there an involved you pick it up pretty quickly.”

The 24-year-old was elevated from the rookie list at the end of last year, after he impressed during his six AFL games. He feels that 2008 is a significant year in his career.

“In a way it is really a make or break year for me,” he said. “I’m still yet to establish myself in the side so I’m just looking forward to having an injury free good year. Last year was all about having a good year and pushing myself up onto the senior list for this year.

“This year I’d love to try to establish myself in the best 22 at the club because it’s a really strong list, so if I could establish myself that would be great.”

According to the midfielder, getting into that 22 is going to be harder than ever.

“Most of our guys are injury free and everyone’s had a pretty solid pre-season,” Jones said. “Spots, come round one, are going to be very hard to come by so I suppose everyone’s in competition with each other in a way. Everyone’s out to impress because everyone wants to be a part of the side.”
