IT HAS been a long time since footy was simply a Saturday afternoon pursuit.

The traditional formula of six games on a Saturday has gradually expanded to become nine games spread over an entire weekend.

While Friday night football has gone from strength to strength in recent years, St Kilda’s foray into Monday night football is one to keep an eye on.

The Saints and Carlton have made it a modern-day tradition in the past few years to play each other on Monday nights, with crowds and TV audiences seemingly warming to the idea.

With Mother’s Day generally affecting Sunday afternoon crowds, the Saints and Blues have become a regular fixture on Monday nights.

Of course the idea of Monday night football is not an unusual concept in other lands. It is the prime spot for teams to play in America’s NFL in front of packed crowds and millions of TV viewers.

The AFL has experimented with Monday night football on and off for about 20 years, as it once did with Anzac Day. But it seems that Carlton and St Kilda are the two teams who could stamp their ownership on the day in a not too different way to how Collingwood and Essendon have made their Anzac Day clashes a blockbuster fixture.

To celebrate St Kilda’s place in Monday night football, we have tipped our hat to the Americans who made it a tradition with our take on a big time Monday Night Football promo!
