St Kilda development coach and Sandringham assistant Paul Hudson spoke to SAINTS.com.au about every player who took the field for Sandringham in its hard-fought loss on Saturday.

VFL MATCH REPORT: Armitage amongst the best in defeat

Darren Minchington
17 disposals, 1 goal
Minchy got himself in the right spots and had a pretty good game in the end. It was pleasing to see him constantly at the bottom of packs and roving contests, which is exactly what we want from him.

Darren just needs to work on his cleanliness with the ball because he probably could have had 30 possessions. His work-rate was excellent and he ran all day.

Dylan Roberton
12 disposals
Dylan was defensively good and offensively ok. He didn’t stand out but played his role well.

Arryn Siposs
10 disposals, 3 behinds
Sippo played just over half a game before he sustained an injury. He had more handballs than kicks which was unusual and it was unfortunate that he didn’t kick straighter. It was pleasing to see his pressure acts up a bit this week as well.

James Gwilt
18 disposals, 1 goal
Jimmy was really good and the opposition may have kicked a few more goals had he not been down there stopping them.

I remember one great bit of play in particular where he ran his opponent down after trailing by about 10 metres at first. Jimmy finished the game as a forward and took a few marks up there and even kicked a goal.

Beau Maister
9 disposals, 1 behind
Beau worked very hard and his GPS results demonstrated this. Although he didn’t kick a goal, he was physical and always presented a good option for our midfielders to kick to.

The last few weeks Beau has taken some great marks but also dropped some simple ones, but I can’t question his commitment and endeavour.
Rhys Stanley
12 disposals, 1 goal, 2 behinds
Rhys was much the same as Beau. He played forward for most of the day until we swung him round into defence late in the game when Gwilty went forward. He was fantastic at centre half back and really made it difficult for the opposition forwards – it was like they couldn’t get the ball past him.

Lewis Pierce
7 disposals, 14 hit outs
Lewis has been quite good for us since he has come back from injury. His tap-work wasn’t as dominant as Holmesy, but he does follow up really well and he’s enthusiastic which is great to see. Again, he will get better as the weeks go on.

Daniel Markworth
19 disposals, 1 goal
Marky had a strange game. It was pleasing how he managed to get his hands on the ball, but by the same token he probably could have been a little bit smarter with his decision making.

He’s great when he’s given space to run in, and he even took a really strong grab as a lead-up forward which was probably one of the best marks I’ve seen this season.

David Armitage
19 disposals, 8 tackles, 1 goal
Armo really cracked in on his return from injury and was our primary go-to player at stoppages. He’s an experienced player who is physically imposing, so he was a great help to our young players in terms of the way he put his body on the line.

David also kicked a really good goal where he followed the play and got a handball receive and finished it off. It was really classy stuff.

Jimmy Webster
19 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 goal
Jimmy was outstanding. He was hard and aggressive for the whole game, both in the air and on the ground. Webby pushed up as a defender over halfway and he took this mark, used his legs and kicked the goal from 50.

The great thing about Jimmy is that he makes other players look good and brings his teammates into the game – it’s a great attribute to have.

Shane Savage
15 disposals
Sav was serviceable and had four tackles as a half-back and midfielder. We’d just like him to settle down in a spot and he’s played forward, back and on the ball so far this year.

Jason Holmes
3 disposals, 40 hit outs
Jason was good in the ruck department again this week. He’s got such a prodigious leap and now he’s learning how to use his body better against his opponent. One of Holmesy’s strengths is his tackling and he did one tackle in particular which was superb and we highlighted it in the post-game wrap-up.
