ALAN Richardson has made just one change to the team that upset Fremantle two weeks ago, recalling 2013 Trevor Barker Award winner Jack Steven following a leg injury that has kept him sidelined since round 16.

Making way is running defender Cameron Shenton, who has played 10 senior games since being elevated off the rookie list prior to round eight.

Midfielder Seb Ross and forward Sam Dunell have been named as the emergencies alongside Shenton.

“It’s good to have Jack back,” Richardson told SAINTS.com.au late on Thursday afternoon.

“It’s been three weeks since he’s played and he just gives us real energy and drive. He’s a quality player and we are just pleased that he’s back in the team.”

The 24-year-old has played just 12 games this year due to injury, but has managed to average over 23 disposals per outing despite the constant setbacks.

Also returning from injury this week, but via the VFL, is defender Sam Gilbert.

The left footer has played 143 games for the Saints since debuting in 2006, but has only managed 12 matches since the beginning of last season.

“Gilbo has missed a lot more football than Jack. He hasn’t played since the West Coast game in round three,” Richardson said.

“He will need a little bit of time and it may only be one week, or it may be a couple of weeks until he comes back into our senior team.”

Gilbert’s injury has been treated with caution, and as a result his return to competitive football has been delayed by up to three weeks.

“He’s been running and training strongly for a long time. Given that it was a recurrence of a foot injury, we were pretty conservative.

“If he didn’t have a recurrence, he would probably have been ready to play two or three weeks ago. But we didn’t want to rush him back and gave him a couple of really good and strong training weeks.

“He’s in pretty good shape but he needs to go at that slightly less intense level in the VFL to begin with.”

Sandringham plays Richmond at ME Bank Centre (Punt Road Oval) on Saturday at 1pm.
