POPULAR reality TV show ‘The Recruit’ will make history tonight when one of three finalists sign a contract with an AFL club at a specially convened draft.

The decision to draft Geelong midfielder Chris Moreland, South Australian forward Johann Wagner or Queensland ruckman Bradie Foster is now in the hands of club recruiters.

“The Recruit is one of the highest rating shows on television and as a recruiting team we keep an eye on a number of avenues to bring players into the club,” St Kilda Recruiting Manager Tony Elshaug told SAINTS.com.au.

“One of those avenues is this show, along with TAC Cup and second tier competitions around the country, not to mention internationally.

“All three finalists look to be talented players with different backgrounds and attributes. I’m sure whoever gets picked up tonight will give AFL footy a good crack next year.”

Recruiters from across the competition will each vote on the final three players on a 3-2-1 basis.

The player with the most votes will be announced as THE RECRUIT and all 18 clubs will have the option to nominate him as a draft selection or to pass.

In the event that more than one club nominates to draft the Recruit, the winner will get to pick the club of his choice.

Given the highly publicised rebuild of the St Kilda Football Club, will the Saints be a likely suitor for one of these mature-aged rookies?

Elshaug says anything is possible.

“We’ve seen in recent years that players like Cameron Shenton and Tom Lee can come in as mature age recruits and work their way into senior football so it can be done,” he said.

“At this point our recruiting strategy is very clear; last year we ended up having three selections in the first 20, and we are keen to do so again this year.

“We’ll go along tonight with an open mind and really look to enjoy the occasion.”

The Recruit live final will air tonight on Fox 8 at 7.30pm.
