ST KILDA midfielder Leigh Montagna has admitted there was an element of luck that led to the goal that sealed a thrilling two-point win over Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday night.

With Melbourne forward Jeremy Howe having just secured the lead with a set shot for goal with 40 seconds to play, the Saints were under the pump to make a final comeback.

Swooping in after Jack Steven delivered a kick into the pocket, Montagna kicked the winning goal. The Saints veteran praised Steven for his gut running in the final minute of the game. “He’d had a tough day. It doesn’t matter how your day’s been you can always have an influence later in the game," Montagna told SAINTS.com.au.

The result of the game extends Melbourne’s losing streak against St Kilda to 11, but the final goal came down to what Montagna said was “Being lucky that the ball jumped up into my arms,” and that it was a matter of “See ball, get ball, kick a goal” that resulted in the final goal.

For the young group to have all these thrilling victories and comeback wins it “Breeds belief that you will get rewarded for effort, if you keep working hardeventually you’ll get rewarded,” Montagna said, “It’s a great confidence booster.”
