EXCITING St Kilda midfielder Daniel McKenzie has been rewarded for an impressive start to his AFL career with a contract extension.

McKenzie, who has played five senior games since making his debut against Essendon in round five, has signed a one-year extension to his current deal that will tie him to the club until at least the end of 2017.

The former Oakleigh Charger, who is predominantly a wingman but has the capacity to play half-back, played his best game against the Bulldogs in round six, collecting 19 disposals and laying four tackles.

He was concussed while taking completing a fearless mark late in St Kilda’s win over Brisbane in round nine, demonstrating his commitment and bravery.

Chief Operating Officer Ameet Bains said the club was delighted to have secured the left-footer’s services.

“It’s obviously exciting for Daniel to have extended his contract until the end of 2017,” Bains told SAINTS.com.au.

“Daniel has been terrific since debuting against Essendon in round five. He’s shown himself to be a tough and courageous player both in terms of his attack on the ball and his marking.”

McKenzie, who was selected with pick 22 in the 2014 National Draft, said re-signing was a no-brainer given the bright future at St Kilda.

“It’s awesome to sign with St Kilda because we have such a young and exciting list,” McKenzie told SAINTS.com.au

“What excites me most is the young talent coming through. There is a lot of room for development and I think we’ve shown our potential in some games early in the season.

McKenzie’s re-signing follows Dylan Roberton and Cameron Shenton, who both re-committed a fortnight ago.

Jack Steven signed on until the end of 2020 on the eve of the season, while 19 young Saints also re-committed towards the end of 2014.
