Sandringham Senior Coach and St Kilda Assistant Coach Paul Hudson provided saints.com.au with an individual analysis on each player from the weekend.

Brodie Murdoch (21 possessions at 87.5 per cent by foot, nine marks, five rebound 50s)

“Brodie continued his good form. Playing off half-back he gave us plenty of drive, his use was great, we really look to exploit his kicking skills because it breaks the game open for us. He continues to put his hand up for senior selection and was an emergency last weekend.”

Jason Holmes (two disposals, five hitouts)

“Holmesy played forward as part of our ruck rotation with Longer and Pierce. He had a quiet day, but kicked a very good ground ball goal. Apart from that he’s still getting his head around leading patterns and forward behaviour in that role.”

Nathan Wright (21 disposals at 76.2 per cent, 5 marks, 3 rebound 50s)

“Nathan played across half-back, his run from there was strong, he was one of our higher handball receive players. He can really break the line with his legs. He ended up having 21 possessions and gave us some drive from that area. His kicking efficiency can improve, so he’s still working on that part of his game.”

Billy Longer (Seven disposals, five hitouts, three score assists)

“It was a funny game from Billy; he got himself to some really good contests but didn’t really impact. He only took the one contested mark and one uncontested mark so for a big fella he didn’t really make a big impact. He did halve a lot of contests though which was positive. He was the back-up ruckman for the round.”

Nick Coughlan (16 disposals, three marks two rebound 50s)

“Nick got better as the game progressed. He played down back, and played his first official senior game with us as he played in the development league in the last couple of weeks prior. His second half was better than his first half, he started to read the flight of the ball better and intercept and give us a bit of drive with his legs in the second half.”

Daniel McKenzie (22 disposals at 81.8 per cent, five tackles, four marks)

“There was a little bit of a question mark regarding Dan’s health before the game – he wasn’t feeling 100 per cent. He got through the day and we gave him right up to the last minute. To his credit he played through duress and had 22 touches. He had more uncontested than contested, but as a wingman he did get back to support the defence and impacted when he played that role.”

Luke Delaney (14 disposals, three marks, two goals)

“Del overcame a poor start to make an impact on the game after half-time when he pushed forward. So that move helped him. He was off early, a bit fumbly and wasn’t really imposing himself as much as he would have liked. But when he moved forward he made contests, got to the edges really well and it was a good result for him.”

Lewis Pierce (19 hitouts, 18 disposals at 83.3 per cent, seven marks, five tackles, three clearances)

“Lewy played one of his best games at VFL level and was one of our better players – he would have been in the votes for sure. Their ruckmen were Elton and Griffiths predominantly, so he’s taken them on, was good on the spread, took some marks and laid a couple of really strong tackles. It was a really well-rounded game, really pleasing for Lewy.”

Josh Saunders (27 disposals, six tackles, five inside 50s, three rebound 50s)

“Josh came back in to the side, he got a lot of the ball but his efficiency by hand was poor, he missed a few targets with his handballs, so he’ll need to work on that this week. He had 27 so he was finding the ball, but just not executing as well as he would have liked. He worked really hard, playing predominantly across half-forward. So to rack up those numbers shows his work rate. All in all a pretty good game from him.”

Brandon White (11 disposals, six contested possessions, six inside 50s)

“Brandon is building his game each week. He looks so damaging with ball in hand and he’s one player who we try and get the ball to because he’s a lovely kick of the footy and can really hit those low penetrating kicks, which just catch the opposition out. He played on a wing, across half0backl, flipping between the two. 11 touches, we’d like him to find a way to win more ball.”

Tom Curren (28 disposals at 82.1 per cent, nine contested possessions, four clearances, three tackles)

“Tommy bounced back really well. He had 28 touches and was our highest clearance player in the middle. It was a really well rounded game from him – he would have been in our votes. Defensively he was good with his tackling. He had both inside 50s and rebound 50s which indicates his work rate. It was a good game from him.”

Cameron Shenton (16 disposals, seven marks, three inside 50s, two score assists, one goal)

“Cam played as a high half-forward. He played well and has been our most unselfish player in the last few weeks. He’s doing really well with his work rate and his intensity; he’s covering the ground really well. He works up and helps in defence and his transition work has been great.”

Hugh Goddard (15 disposals at 80 per cent, eight marks, five tackles)

“Hughie was another one who got better as the game wore on. He took more marks in the second half and we started to get on top as a team as well. Working with Tommy Lee down there on Liam McBean, Ben Griffiths and Mabior Chol, they rotated through those two. And working with the other defenders they started to gel a bit better than they have previously.  He was good and had a lot of tackles which was positive.”

Tom Lee (18 disposals at 83.3 per cent, seven marks, two rebound 50s)

“Along with Hughie, he was really good. He was a lot better at dropping off and being that player behind the ball, but we still want him to be accountable and then get off when the opportunity arises. He got better as the second half went on. Tom’s intercept play was promising, he took seven marks.”

Eli Templeton (23 disposals at 87 per cent, six marks, six inside 50s, two goals)

“Eli had a great game. Talking to ‘Richo’ he looked like an AFL player at that level. He ended up getting on the end of couple too. His work rate and efficiency was good at 87 per cent – he was damaging with the ball when he did get it. He made the most of his possessions.”

Jack Lonie (33 disposals, 12 contested possessions, seven clearances, five tackles, four inside 50s)

“Jack was tremendous. I mean he nearly played the perfect game coming back. His attitude was great. He had 30 plus possessions and kicked three goals playing predominantly in the midfield. Jack imposed himself around the ground with his intensity, pressure, tackling and his intercepts.”
