After spending time at the Gold Coast Suns in defence and starting as a midfielder when he landed at St Kilda, Mav Weller is now thriving as a defensive forward.

As part of his football evolution, the versatile Tasmanian has transitioned into the role this season and become an important part of St Kilda’s attacking arsenal.

On Saturday night, Weller produced one of his finest performances against Geelong, collecting 19 disposals, six tackles, two important goals and 36.6 pressure points – No. 4 at St Kilda.

The 24-year-old credits his consistent form this season to a clear understanding of his role within the team. For Weller, pressure is the cornerstone of his game.

“I spend the majority of my time forward now and it’s a really simple process for me. The confidence to play the same position really helps,” Weller told Triple M on Monday.

“All I do is go out there and worry about giving great pressure, that’s my role and really anything else is a bonus.

“I’m down there for my pressure and my leadership and that’s about it.

“It’s really simple for me and I’m just loving my football at the moment.”

On the back of Saturday night’s pulsating three-point win over premiership favourites Geelong, Weller says the Saints are well placed to finish the season with a wet sail.

“We were pretty happy with the performance. Obviously coming off that bye it was good to set ourselves up to attack the second half of the season,” he said.
