Emerging St Kilda key forward Paddy McCartin is set to return to football at some level this weekend after overcoming his third concussion of 2016.

The 19-year-old suffered his latest head knock in the opening quarter of St Kilda’s Round 15 loss to Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

It was the third time this season, and fourth in his short career at the Saints, where he has been forced from the ground with concussion, following incidents against Adelaide (Round 11) and Collingwood (Round 3) earlier in the year.

Saints GM of Football Performance, Jamie Cox, revealed that the 2014 No. 1 pick had resumed full contact training after getting the green light following his most recent MRI scans.

“We expect Paddy to be full fit and available for selection this week, whether that’s through the VFL or the AFL we’ll determine later in the week at selection. But it’s good news that Paddy’s likely to resume this week,” Cox told saints.com.au.

“Paddy’s been symptom free for the best part of a month. He’s been training strongly during that time and is now back in full contest training and his most recent MRI scans were all clear last week. So really good news.”

In more good news on the medical front, veteran key defender Sam Fisher is also set to return this weekend after recovering from a lingering hamstring complaint. The dual best and fairest winner hasn’t played since Round 10 after straining his hamstring at training.

“Sam’s been training strongly now for a couple of weeks. He’s a test this week but he looks likely to return to football this week, which is good news for ‘Fish’,” Cox said.

While half-back Jimmy Webster is still one week from resuming from a hamstring, which has sidelined the Tasmanian since the Saints’ pulsating three-point win over Geelong in Round 14.

“Jimmy’s probably still a week away. He’s back into training but really probably needs a bit more training to be fully fit to resume,” Cox said.

First-year pair Brandon White (hamstring) and Bailey Rice (concussion) were two casualties from Sandringham’s loss to Casey on Sunday, with both likely to miss at least one game.

“Brandon White strained a hamstring early in the VFL game last week at training. It’s not a bad one though, we expect him to miss only a couple of weeks,” Cox said.

“Bailey missed the back end of the game at Sandringham. He got concussed in some friendly fire from Tommy Lee and he’ll probably likely miss a week.”
