St Kilda still has four opportunities to build towards the future and become a more consistent side ahead of 2017, says reliable small defender Jarryn Geary.

The Saints’ remote chance of playing in this year’s finals campaign evaporated on Saturday night after North Melbourne won an ugly affair in Brent Harvey’s record breaking occasion.

After producing another strong performance, this time shutting down dangerous goal sneak Lindsay Thomas, Geary revealed the Saints put results to the side in the tail end of the season, preferring to focus on the process.

“We set ourselves for the last six weeks to try and reach goals and that won’t change. We’ve got four opportunities to really improve our football and become a more consistent side,” Geary told saints.com.au after Saturday night’s loss.

“Result were put to the side, we always said if we win that’s nice but tonight didn’t go our way.

“We’ll just continue to work on the things that we’ve identified will make us a better team in the future and we’ve got four opportunities to do that now.”

Following an impressive fortnight against the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, St Kilda was brought back down to earth on Saturday night, slipping to three games outside the eight.

A disenchanted Geary said the Saints didn’t produce the type of performance they needed to in order to keep their faint finals chance alive.

“It is pretty disappointing. We thought we were up for the fight, but probably didn’t put in a performance that we really wanted to,” Geary said.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve been able to produce four quarters of really good football and tonight we let that slide a bit.”
