With the AFL Draft approaching ever closer, SAINTS.com.au takes a look back at some of the club's most significant hauls in the past 20 years.

The pursuit of high end talent saw St Kilda again pull some moves to secure another pick inside the top 25. With their first two selections, the Saints were able to secure future bookends Paddy McCartin and Hugh Goddard, while nabbing Daniel McKenzie and Jack Lonie with pick 22 and 41.

This edition of Draft Throwback dissects the 2014 AFL Draft.

Pick 1 – Paddy McCartin, Geelong Falcons VIC

With their first number one draft pick in 12 years, St Kilda selected Geelong Falcons forward Paddy McCartin. While many fans were left admiring McCartin for his collarbone-breaking courage against Richmond in round 22, it was a similar act that left recruiting taking notice. As an underager, McCartin crunched now Eagles mid Dom Sheed going for a low ball, concussed in the process. Playing on, Paddy booted five goals and never looked back – firming as a high pick despite a limited TAC Cup year.

Pick 21 – Hugh Goddard, Geelong Falcons VIC

Switching teams five times in five years, pick 21 eventually landed at St Kilda in a deal that sent Rhys Stanley to Geelong. Another Geelong Falcons product, Goddard had to juggles the difficulties of footy and school – boarding at Melbourne Grammar whilst playing footy down the coast in Geelong. Noted for his versatility, the towering defender played at both ends during his TAC Cup days and recorded an excellent AFL Combine time of 2.98 seconds in the 20m-sprint test. Goddard was also handy in the air, averaging seven marks at TAC Cup level.

Pick 22 – Daniel McKenzie, Oakleigh Chargers VIC

Talented midfielder with plenty of dash, McKenzie showed he was a man for the big occasion in the 2014 TAC Cup Grand Final – near best on ground with 21 disposals and seven marks. His testing at the AFL Combine was also exceptional, ranked third for the running vertical jump, second in the agility run, fourth in repeat sprints and sixth in the 3km time trial.

Pick 41 – Jack Lonie, Dandenong Stingrays VIC

Living less than 2km from Linen House Centre, Lonie follows esteemed company to come from Seaford Football Club – with club great Robert Harvey also playing for the local club. Rated one of the best small forwards in the draft, Lonie showed throughout his TAC Cup season an ability to win the ball and punish on the scoreboard. His pressure inside 50 also caught the recruiter’s eye and subsequently led to a debut in Round 1, 2015.
