Disappointed St Kilda Coach Alan Richardson says Sydney was simply far too good for St Kilda on Saturday, with poor kicking burning the Saints at Etihad Stadium.

The Swans extended their winning streak against St Kilda to seven consecutive games with 18.10 (118) to 10.8 (68) win, making the Saints pay for their poor ball use out of the back half and poor entry inside 50.

In the aftermath of St Kilda’s first loss in the last month, Richardson said his side ‘butchered’ the ball in ideal conditions for football, on the back of a combination of  Sydney’s pressure and the Saints’ unforced errors.

“I’m really disappointed. We got beaten on the outside and that’s been a strength of ours the last month – they got us on the outside,” Richardson told reporters in his post-match press conference on Saturday.

“The margin is the really disappointing part. Our footy didn’t work today and that’s full credit to Sydney; they were too good for us really.

“It shouldn’t be that margin and it was that margin because we just butchered the footy. Now part of that was Sydney, but it was too often that we had players that weren’t under pressure and weren’t able to execute, whether that was rebound or entry.

“They scored too much from our own kick from the back and they scored too much from our own kick from the back and they scored too much from our poor kick going inside 50.”

Saints wingman Jack Newnes came from the ground midway through the first quarter in his 100th game for the club and didn’t return after a heavy collision with Sydney young gun Callum Mills left him with a concussion.

Richardson praised Newnes for an act of bravery that typifies how he goes about his football, in a moment that created a goal for Jade Gresham against the flow and turned one into two seconds later when Nick Riewoldt kicked his first.

“His act was symbolic of the way Newnesy has played all through his career; we ended up scoring from that play. It was disappointing not to have him for the rest of the game," Richardson said.

“It was concussion. He’s really likely to play next week, that’s the early call. We’ll have to wait and see how he responds. He’s a really important player for us.

“It was his 100th game today, ‘Gears’ 150, they are great Saints men, they play the right way, they are really competitive people.”
