Emerging defender Hugh Goddard will not play again at any level this season after confirmation he will require surgery to repair ligaments in his right foot.

Goddard suffered the injury in Round 7 of the VFL after making a promising return this season from an Achilles tendon injury incurred in 2016.

General Manager of Football Performance Jamie Cox said the club would support Goddard as he begins another rehabilitation program.

“The way in which Hugh approached his rehabilitation last season was first class and testament to his professionalism," Cox told saints.com.au.

“The new injury is unrelated to the Achillies but unfortunately means another extended break on the sidelines which we are certain he will approach in the same manner.

“He remains an important member of our playing group and we will make sure he is well supported to overcome this setback.”

Goddard will have surgery in the coming days with the club to work toward having the defender ready resume full training at the beginning of the pre-season.
