St Kilda midfielder Jack Steele has pressed his name for an AFL recall following a strong performance for Sandringham the Zebras’ 25-point loss to Coburg on Saturday.

Steele, 21, was arguably the best player on the ground for the home side gathering 36 disposals, eight tackles and a goal in his first VFL outing since joining the Saints from Greater Western Sydney at the end of last season.

“Jack Steele was terrific for us in his first outing at VFL level,” Sandringham Assistant Coach Brendan Allen told saints.com.au.

“Senior AFL bodies like him who come back to this level often are a class above and get a lot of the football but like a lot of our midfielders today, our ball use was really poor and it needs to be a lot better.

“He’s a quality player that we suspect won’t be out of the St Kilda team for too long.”

The impressive form of rookie Rowan Marshall continued again on Saturday, starting as a defender before being switched forward late in the absence of Paddy McCartin.

Allen made mention of Marshall’s versatility and ability to take marks at either end of the ground as a real weapon in the Sandringham side.

“Rowan Marshall has been sent into defence due to St Kilda being thin regarding their tall defenders and as a first-year rookie he’s been terrific," he said.

“He took six marks today, which is actually his average per game, just shows how valuable he can be at either end of the ground so we’re really pleased with how he’s developing as a young tall.”
