Last week was a big week for St Kilda Football Club and Maddie Riewoldt's Vision.

saints.com.au takes a look back at some of the media coverage during, before and after Maddie's Match last week.

Alan Richardson on Fox Footy’s AFL 360

“That’s coaching and I don’t think it works unless you have constant communication and let people know where they sit and how they are travelling.”

Nick Riewoldt on Channel Seven’s Talking Footy

Josh Bruce on RSN Breakfast

“I had some form issues earlier in the year and got dropped, so I went back and worked on some things. I’m just really happy to be back in the team and contributing.”

Jarryn Geary & Leigh Montagna press conference at St Kilda Surf Life Saving Club

"I'm not sure when the decision will come. As we understand, it's not my decision anyway. "The club's going to have a fair influence on that and when that is - that will take care of itself. At the moment, we're just worried about playing good footy.”

Nick and Jack Riewoldt press conference at Art of Football exhibition

Nick Riewoldt on AFL 360

“I think the new thing that’s come into the mix since I first started as a young player is social media. There’s just so much negativity out there that regardless of whether you’re a subscriber to Twitter — I’m not on Twitter – but it has a way of finding you.

“Whether the coach might ask you how you’re going with the negativity, a player might ask you ‘oh, did you see what so-and-so said.’ There’s nothing good that comes out of social media from my experience.

“It’s an unfortunate reality of the world that we’re living in. I don’t have the answer but I think it’s contributing, it’s a society problem, not just football players.”

Thursday, July 6

Tim Membrey on SEN Breakfast

“At the moment I think we’re getting that dare back. The coaches are always pushing for us to play our way, keep backing our method in and that’s to take the game on and be bold with the footy. We are starting to get that back into our game which is good. If we can build that in the next few weeks and find some form there’s no reason why we can’t go deep into September.”

Nick Riewoldt press conference at Linen House Centre

“The football community is unlike anything else to be able to rally and get behind a cause. We are so lucky that we have the platform to do something positive with our grief because most people don’t have that.”

Jake Carlisle on saints.com.au about 100th game

“I’ve made some mistakes in my career but having my manager there, my Dad, my Mum and my four sisters have helped me immensely. Without a close family and the stuff I’ve been through, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said.

“I feel like they’ve had a massive impact on my life and my career as well because without those sort of people it’s not motivating to get up every day and do something where you’re under so much scrutiny.

“It’s obviously been tough at times but the love and support of my family has been massive for me to play my best football possible. My aim every week is to go out there and try and make my family and friends proud of who I stand for.”

Saturday, July 8

Alan Richardson in the Herald Sun on how his trip to India last off-season has helped his coaching in 2017.

“I think it’s helped with my footy — but you’d have to ask someone else really. It’s being able to stay calm and composed and yet still be challenging, and not get overly emotional," Richardson told Herald Sun journalist Lauren Wood.

“We have such good people around us at footy clubs now, or we certainly do at the Saints, and on game day … the weekend’s game was a great example of that. We had a little bit of confusion with five minutes to go, so we made the call after discussing that (Adam) Kingsley — who is a really experienced assistant — should go down on the bench and try and have an influence on something that was happening through the midfield and he did a really good job.

“I reckon if everyone is going off their head in the box and you’re not calm and calculated, you’re a chance you can miss those things. We’re far from perfect, but that’s an example of being as composed as you can under pressure, can potentially make a difference.”

Nick Riewoldt on saints.com.au on the impact of Maddie's Match

“We’re just so grateful. It’s been two years now; the first Maddie’s Match was so well embraced and tonight was no exception. So not just our family, but all the other sufferers out there, the brothers, the sisters, the sons, the daughters, the parents are so grateful.

"This is an under resourced area and you can feel very lonely. But to know there were 47 and a half thousand people here tonight, particularly the Saints fans who have gotten behind us, from the bottom of our hearts thank you.”
