AFL 2017 Round 07 - St Kilda v GWS Giants

St Kilda has fallen to ninth on the ladder with six games to go in the home and away season.

What’s most important is how we prepare for the coming week; we move on and we take our lessons and have another crack; that’s the most important thing.

St Kilda Coach Alan Richardson was left scratching his head on Friday night.

How was the performance against Essendon so different to the one produced against Richmond less than a week earlier?

Coming off a second consecutive six-day break, including a trip to Perth, plus the emotional high of Maddie’s Match, the Saints didn’t turn up with the required level of effort and intensity at Etihad Stadium.

Speaking on Melbourne radio station SEN after the 61-point loss to Essendon, Richardson said the football department at Linen House Centre would look into the reasons behind the poor performance before regrouping ahead of this weekend’s trip to Sydney.

“When you have a performance where you just lack the energy that you normally come with then you look at all those things (reasons behind performance),” Richardson said on SEN’s Crunch Time on Saturday.

“Were we hoping too much for someone else to do the hard work? Am I going to fill my boots today in terms of possession or perhaps shots on goal? So you look at all that.

“What’s most important is how we prepare for the coming week; we move on and we take our lessons and have another crack; that’s the most important thing.”

While schoolboy Josh Battle didn’t set the world on fire in his debut, Richardson said the teenage key forward would benefit greatly from the exposure and has the tools to be a good player at AFL level.

“He’s a really good kid, he’s got a lot of really good attributes and he’s going to be a really good player for us for a long time,” Richardson said.

“For [Aaron] ‘Sammy’ Hamill to now be able to sit down with him and have a look at him playing on [Michael] Hurley at times, have a look at him playing on [Michael] Hartley at times (and find out) what did you learn? How can you get off these blokes next time?

“They’re great opportunities for him and we won’t miss those just because we had a dirty night.”
