St Kilda defender Shane Savage admits Monday's review meeting was brutal as the Saints dissected what went wrong in Friday night’s heavy loss to Essendon at Etihad Stadium.

The Bombers held St Kilda goalless in the opening term, led from start to finish and could have been even further ahead earlier in the game had they not been so wasteful in front of goal, before defeating Alan Richardson’s men by 61-points.

Savage, who was one of St Kilda’s key contributors with 31 disposals, 10 intercept possessions and 487 metres gained, said the Saints emerged from the review meeting with plenty of lessons.

“It sure was (a brutal review). It was obviously a really disappointing performance on the weekend,” Savage told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We just didn’t turn up with the energy like the previous week against Richmond. We were on the back foot early and we just weren’t able to gather any momentum.

“The meeting was short and sharp but we got what we needed to get out of the meeting.”

Savage, 26, said St Kilda has now moved on from the Essendon loss and turned their attention to preparing for the in-form team in the competition, Sydney, who has emerged from a 0-6 start to win nine of their last ten games and sit inside the top eight.

“We’ve moved on, we’ve got a couple of good training sessions throughout the week and we’ll head up to Sydney looking to get a win.

“They are in good form, playing at their home deck as well. I think they have won nine of their past ten games.

“We don’t fear anyone at the moment but we know that the season is so close so every game counts. If we turn up with the energy and the pressure that we know we can bring then we give ourselves a good chance.”
