Star St Kilda midfielder David Armitage is set to make his long awaited return from groin surgery this weekend, but the news isn't as good for veteran defender Sam Gilbert who will miss the next three to four weeks.

Armitage, 29, hasn’t played since Round 4 and has only played twice this season, with two bouts of surgery derailing his 2017 campaign, but is set to resume for Sandringham down in Geelong on Saturday.

“After a long layoff, David Armitage looks likely to recommence in the VFL this week, which ‘Armo’ is very excited about and so are we, so that’s some really good news,” GM Football Performance Jamie Cox told saints.com.au.

Cox said veteran defender Sam Gilbert is set to miss the next month after he had surgery to repair his hand after Friday night’s loss to Essendon at Etihad Stadium.

“Sam actually popped a knuckle in his hand and actually burst the skin open in front of his hands, which was a bit nasty at the time,” Cox said.

“He had some surgery on the Sunday to repair the knuckle and to sew the wound. He’ll probably miss three to four weeks.”

After missing the loss to the Bombers with a minor hamstring issue, Cox indicated that ruckman Billy Longer is a chance to face Sydney at the SCG on Saturday.

“Billy Longer missed last week with a fairly low grade hamstring strain. He will do a test on Thursday to see if Billy is available for selection,” Cox said.

Recently re-signed father-son recruit Bailey Rice will also face a fitness test to determine his availability this weekend after he copped a heavy knock to his shin early in Sandringham’s win over Port Melbourne on Saturday.

“Bailey Rice only played about half of the first quarter for Sandringham on the weekend before he got a knock to the shin,” Cox said.

“He tried to recommence but he was just a bit sore. He’ll be tested this week with the hope that he’ll be available to play too.”
