St Kilda veteran Leigh Montagna is set to miss the next three to four weeks with a hamstring strain but could return before the end of the home and away season.

The 33-year-old injured his right hamstring in the third quarter of the 42-point loss to Sydney at the SCG on Saturday night.

St Kilda Coach Alan Richardson admits the injury is more severe than the club and Montagna hoped, but is still optimistic the dual All-Australian will play again this season.

“He’s had his scan and certainly he’s done some damage to the hamstring,” Richardson said on Fox Footy on Monday night.

“We’re still really hopeful that we’ll get him back before the home and away season is done and dusted. But certainly he gave it a tear.

“We’re thinking probably around a month, but having said that it does depend on how they respond.

“It’s a bit more than we would have hoped and 'Joey' would have hoped but there is still an opportunity for him to be back before the end of the year.”

Montagna has played all but one game in his 16th season at the highest level, taking his career tally to 287 games.
