What a difference a week makes.

A week after being taught a harsh lesson by Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, St Kilda executed what they spent the week practising at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

When they found themselves in a similar situation against West Coast, inside midfielder Jack Steele says the Saints were prepared and determined to atone for their gut wrenching finish last weekend.

“Last week we didn’t get the job done in a similar situation. We reviewed that game pretty heavily and this time we were able to get it done so we’re pretty happy,” Steele told saints.com.au after the thrilling eight-point win on Sunday.

“We changed a few things within the structure and players knowing their role better in that situation.

“Last time we played the Eagles in Round 2 we went away from the way we played (in the last quarter) and that’s one thing that we focused on going into the last quarter and obviously we won.”

While he mightn’t have generated the same noise as Tom Mitchell or Zach Tuohy, Steele has emerged as one of the best trades from last October’s exchange period.

The former opportunity starved Giant has played all but two games in his first season at Linen House Centre, where has averaged the most contested possessions (10.4) and tackles (7.8) at St Kilda, along with 21.4 disposals (No. 8) and 3.8 clearances (No. 4).

With St Kilda’s season on the line at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Steele produced the best performance of his short career.

He nullified reigning West Coast club champion Luke Shuey, holding him to his lowest disposal count since 2015, and amassed 26 possessions (20 contested), 12 tackles, 10 clearances, two goals and potentially three votes in a complete performance.

“I had a role on Luke Shuey, especially at stoppage because he’s a really good clearance player, so I just tried to minimise his effectiveness at stoppage and go with him around the ground as much as I could. So I was able to do that so I was happy,” Steele said.

And he wasn’t the only one happy in the aftermath.

Alan Richardson was full of praise in his post-match press conference and you can be sure the recruiting team were happy. Best value trade of 2016? Surely.
