St Kilda Coach Alan Richardson admits his side has an issue with conversion after the Saints produced another costly day of wasted opportunities in Sunday’s 24-point loss to Melbourne at the MCG.

After falling five goals behind by the first break before stemming the bleeding in the second quarter, St Kilda gained the ascendancy in the third quarter booting 4.7 to 1.3, but couldn’t capitalise on their dominance.

In a year where the Saints have been marred by inaccuracy – they are ranked last in the competition for conversion at 51.4 per cent – Richardson said St Kilda must improve their execution so they take their opportunities when they present.

“You’ve always got to make the most of your opportunities,” Richardson told reporters after St Kilda’s shattering loss at the MCG on Sunday.

“We nearly beat Port over there (after) being 2.12 at one stage. That’s been a bit of an issue for us; it’s been more than a bit of an issue, it’s been an issue for us.

“Our guys work incredibly hard. We think we have the program to give our guys the best opportunity to be able to execute their work. We clearly need to get better.

“When you’re playing catch up footy you need to be able to make the most of your opportunities. We played really strong footy in the third quarter, but weren’t able to maximise.

“At least they gave ourselves an opportunity with our method; we’ve just got to keep working on execution.”

Richardson refuted the suggestion the ground had an impact on St Kilda’s performance, given the Saints hadn’t played on the wide expanses of the MCG in 2017 and not since the second last round of last season.

“It was not an issue. We played here three times last year and won all of them,” he said.

“I think this venue actually suits the way we play when we execute some of the basics and the fundamentals, and that is when you’ve got the ball kick it to a teammate.

“We got a lot of opportunities, we got a lot of really good looks, we just weren’t able to execute. It has nothing to do with the ground, in fact I think the ground suits us.”
