After more than a decade at Collingwood, full back Nathan Brown crossed to Linen House Centre last October and instantly recaptured some of his best form in 2017.

For the first time in a career that began when the Magpies picked him in the first round of 2006, Brown played every game and passed the 150-game barrier in the process.

Alongside another key inclusion in former Bomber Jake Carlisle, the pair provided the Saints with big-bodied options down back and helped reduce opposition scores.

The 29-year-old started the season strongly against West Coast’s dual Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy in Perth, before beating Collingwood’s Darcy Moore, Geelong’s Tom Hawkins and Greater Western Sydney’s Jonathan Patton in the first half of the year.

After the mid-season bye, the premiership defender also added All-Australian forwards Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt to his list of scalps in 2017, as well as limiting the influencer of Port Adelaide monster Charlie Dixon at Adelaide Oval late in the season.

Performance of the year:

Round 14 v Gold Coast at Etihad Stadium: Brown held last year’s All-Australian forward Tom Lynch to just one behind at four marks during 90 minutes on the Suns captain.

Alan Richardson's view:

“We were really pleased with what ‘Browny’ brought to our team this season,” Richardson said.

“We’d been asking ‘Gilbo’, Sam Fisher and Sean Dempster to play out of their weight division for a long time, so to get ‘Browny’ in alongside Jake to play on the bigger guys was a major boost for our defence.

“He was rarely beaten this year and he instilled a high level of trust in our back six, which rubbed off on players like Dylan Roberton and Jimmy Webster.

“With his many years of experience in the game, ‘Browny’ sets such a great example for the younger guys through his professionalism.”
