In a year where a handful of players have been touted as the No. 1 pick, no one is certain whose name will be read out first only one sleep out from the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.

Will it be Cam Rayner from the Western Jets? The late bolter from Haileybury College in Andrew Brayshaw? Perhaps Luke Davies-Uniacke or Paddy Dow?

No one knows except the Brisbane Lions.

And maybe they haven’t made a definitive decision yet.

So who will be available and how will St Kilda go about picking at No. 7 and No. 8?

St Kilda List and Recruiting Manager Tony Elshaug explained that the Saints have ranked the first eight players in this year’s draft pool based on the clubs needs and the player's talent.

From there, St Kilda will cross each name off its list as the first-round unfolds until it is their turn to select at No. 7, in what is the first time in 16 years that the club has had two top 10 picks.

“We’ve got the order in mind and we’ll just wait for the other clubs to read out their names and we’ll scratch them off and we’ll see what two players are left (at No. 7 and No. 8),” Elshaug said on Melbourne radio station SEN on Thursday.

“They’ll be the two players that we take based on our rankings and everything else that we have considered to rank the players in that particular order.

and what complements each other within that draft.

“We’re pleased and we’ve gone through all the scenarios. If it’s two and seven or player four and eight or six and seven or seven eight we’re happy with that.

“We’ll have to see what the others do and if other clubs pick some outside that eight then that puts us in a better position.”
