Poor skill execution and a lack of pace will be exploited in the short format of the game, so St Kilda has picked players who possess a mixture of both, says Saints Assistant Coach Lindsay Gilbee.

AFLX is set to suit speedy, tidy ball users like Jack Sinclair, Shane Savage, Mav Weller, Jimmy Webster and Ray Connellan, when St Kilda faces Essendon and Hawthorn in the inaugural tournament on Friday night.

“You had to select your team around it; Players need to have a mixture (of speed and skill),” Gilbee told the Inside St Kilda podcast this week.

‘They’ve got to be able to kick it; they’ve got to be able to be good at contest and they’ve got to be able to run.

“That’s the team that we’ve gone with and we think we’ve got a team really suited to AFLX.”

Gilbee said AFLX Coach Ben McGlynn has grasped the opportunity to coach his own side for the first time with both hands.

“He’s been great. It’s obviously his first opportunity to get out and coach his own team,” he said.

“We might need a milk crate for him to stand on so he can at least get to eye level of one of our smallest players, even Jack Lonie’s height.

“All jokes aside, he’s highly respected from his career and obviously knows his stuff, so I think he will do a great job on Friday night.”
