Three-time Trevor Barker Award-winner Jack Steven could enter prestigious company if he takes home the coveted St Kilda honour on Wednesday night.

Steven would draw level with dual Brownlow Medallist and St Kilda Hall of Fame Legend Robert Harvey and celebrated Saints full-back Bill Cubbins on four club best-and-fairests, with Nick Riewoldt’s six still the record-holder.

The explosive midfielder enjoyed another outstanding season in red, white and black, and alongside fellow on-baller Seb Ross, the duo comfortably leads the pack in this year’s best-and-fairest race.

POLL: Goal of the Year

Like Ross, ‘Stuv’ was a beacon of consistency and displayed his trademark inexhaustible effort all year, a trait that has endeared him to Saints fans for the best part of a decade.

Playing all 22 games, the 28-year-old’s on-field dominance is clearly reflected in his statistics.

Steven’s 27-disposal average was the second-most of any Saint, while he ranked first at St Kilda in inside-50s (4.7), clearances (5.5) and contested possessions (10.1).

Add in his third-place finish in tackles (3.5) and metres gained (387.9), and the numbers paint an imposing but accurate picture of a tireless blue-collar warrior who refuses to concede.

In a season peppered with brilliant performances, Steven saved his best until last, when he was nothing short of inspirational in Round 23 against North Melbourne.

34 disposals (14 contested), two goals, nine clearances, 12 inside-50s and 631 metres gained formed the backbone of a near career-best outing for the experienced Saint.

But the pure statistics don’t do his influence on the day justice.

When the Saints got on the front foot in the third term, it was ‘Stuv’ who led from the centre, dominating the clearances and booting a crucial goal.

Ultimately the Saints were unable to stifle the Jarrad Waite-inspired ‘Roos, but after a few quiet performances, it was a timely and ominous reminder of just what the No. 3 can produce.

Come game-day, there are few certainties in football, but every Saints fan knows beyond doubt that Jack Steven will give his all for his footy club.

He is fiercely competitive, and his dynamic influence on the ball is not lost on his teammates.

“The way he goes about his footy really inspires us,” in-form defender Jimmy Webster told saints.com.au.

“‘Stuvvy’ gets tagged most weeks and he still finds a way to perform, so he’s someone that I love watching.”

Director of Coaching Danny Sexton didn’t hold back in his praise for the gut-running midfielder.

“Jack was always in our strongest midfield, and he was consistently one of our best performers,” he told saints.com.au.

“He brings elite pressure around the ball and really good line-breaking speed, and he improved his kicking a lot this year.

“Whenever we got a real run-on in terms of hitting the scoreboard, Jack was often the one kicking goals out of the midfield.

“He was once again our liveliest player – his effort is always huge – and he’s a highly respected player across the competition.”

Steven finished sixth in last year’s count on 108 votes, having won the award in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
