A reliable and hard-running defender, Gwilt was taken by St Kilda in the 2004 National AFL Draft at pick 63.

He made a late start to the 2012 season, returning to the senior side in Round 9 vs Sydney after a knee reconstruction. He played every game from then until the end of the year, often going head-to-head with some of the competitions best forwards.

2012 was also his first year on the Saints leadership group, and 2013 shapes as another crucial season.

James began his career in suburban football instead of participating in the TAC Cup. He played for Noble Park in the Eastern Football League and was best on ground in the league’s grand final in 2004.

Of Papua New Guinean and Welsh descent, he was recruited to St Kilda in 2004 as the Club’s fourth round pick, #63 overall.

James burst onto the AFL scene in 2005 in the Qualifying final against Adelaide, impressing with two goals. He then spent most of 2006 playing for St Kilda’s former affiliate VFL side, Casey Scorpions.

In 2011, James was arguably St Kilda’s most reliable key defender, beginning the season in fantastic form, until he was unfortunately struck down with a season ending knee injury in Round 17 against West Coast.
