As the only St Kilda player to be upgraded from the rookie list so far this season, Tom Simpkin is certainly taking the promotion in his stride.

An emerging key defender, Simpkin was recruited with pick No.29 in the 2009 Rookie Draft.

A string of impressive performances at VFL level earned him a call-up to the senior list and subsequent debut in 2011 before he played 19 games in 2012.

Pre-season surgery last year put Simpkin slightly behind the eight-ball, and he managed to play just five senior games before surgery cut short his season in round 19.

Simpkin remains a reliable and sturdy defender and signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the Saints until the end of 2015.

An emerging tall defender, Simpkin was recruited in the 2009 Rookie Draft and was elevated to the senior list in 2011 after some fantastic VFL form.

2012 was a breakout year for the reliable defender, as he played 19 games and firmly established himself in the best 22.

Pre-season surgery to correct long-standing shin problems leaves Simpkin primed for another big season as he continues develop his defensive skills.

Tom is a mobile and skilful 21-year-old who was recruited in the 2009 Rookie Draft and elevated to the senior side in 2011 after an outstanding year in the VFL.

He suffered a number of injury setbacks in his first two seasons with the Club, but overcame them to make his AFL debut during Round 11 of the 2011 season.

Tom showed in his two games that he could develop into a reliable key defender for the Club moving forward, especially after impressing against Collingwood by keeping key forward Chris Dawes to just two goals.

Tom made the most of his opportunity as a Rookie and can now join his older brother, Jonathon Simpkin from Geelong, in the big league.

Season by season

A hard at it defender, Simpkin was recruited with pick 29 in the 2009 Rookie Draft.

He was used up forward at times during the five AFL games he played in 2014, demonstrating great attack on the footy – often to the detriment of his physical wellbeing.

2014 coaches’ perspective – David Teague (defensive coach)

Tom had limited opportunities at senior level and got thrown forward there for a bit while we were looking for another tall option. His form over the last eight weeks, particularly at VFL level, has been exceptional. Tom is still improving and rarely gets beaten. Hopefully he can take his opportunities next year and cement a spot in the senior team.
