James began his career in suburban football instead of participating in the TAC Cup. He played for Noble Park in the Eastern Football League and was best on ground in the league’s grand final in 2004.

Of Papua New Guinean and Welsh descent, he was recruited to St Kilda in 2004 as the Club’s fourth round pick, #63 overall.

James burst onto the AFL scene in 2005 in the Qualifying final against Adelaide, impressing with two goals. He then spent most of 2006 playing for St Kilda’s former affiliate VFL side, Casey Scorpions.

In 2011, James was arguably St Kilda’s most reliable key defender, beginning the season in fantastic form, until he was unfortunately struck down with a season ending knee injury in Round 17 against West Coast.

After undergoing a reconstruction, Gwilt returned to full contact training with the main squad in the lead-up to Round 1, but is some weeks away from a return to game fitness.

James is best known for his trade-mark hair, which he hasn’t cut for three years.
