The 18-year-old, who stands at 196cm and weighs close to 100kgs, was told of his selection on Thursday afternoon by senior coach Alan Richardson.

Goddard will be St Kilda’s 16th new player* and 10th AFL debutant since Alan Richardson took over at the beginning of 2014.

Part-time defensive coach Danny Frawley was one of the first to congratulate the teenager on his selection, which follows a consistent run of VFL form.

“He’s very excited as are Rohan Welsh, Lindsay Gilbee and me. We’ve all worked closely with him this year,” Frawley told SAINTS.com.au.

“He’s been very patient but as far as first-year players go, he’s been the consummate professional. He’s ticked every box and hasn’t missed a training session.

“His willingness to learn will hold him in good stead and he’s someone who Saints supporters will be really proud of.”

Frawley, who played 240 games for St Kilda and captained the club 177 times, urged Saints fans to turn up in numbers for Maddie’s Match.

“Get along on Sunday evening to say you saw Hugh Goddard’s first game, because he will probably play 200 on his ear,” he said.

“He’s tough, unrelenting, courageous and ready. He’ll do well and some of the Richmond forwards will know he’s played his first game, that’s for sure.”

Goddard is the second cousin of ex-Saint and current Bomber Brendon Goddard.

St Kilda will name a 25-man squad on Thursday evening at 6.30 before cutting it to 22 on Friday afternoon.
