The Southern Saints have made it five wins in a row following an impressive display against Darebin in wet and windy conditions at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

There were multiple standout performances, with Jacqui Vogt, Olivia Vesely and Rebecca Neaves all reading the play well in the 6.7 (43) to 2.4 (16) win.

However, the day belonged to Poppy Kelly and Caitlin Greiser.

Kelly dominated the hit-outs in the ruck, while Greiser slotted three important goals as the Southern Saints romped away with the 27-point win.

The opening quarter saw a four-goal blitz by the Saints as they capitalised on their attacking dominance.

After three behinds, the Saints finally kicked their first when Samantha Johnson grabbed the ball from an empty ruck contest and banged it through the big sticks on the eighth minute.

Midway through the first, Amy Silver found herself on the scoresheet to make it a 15-point ball game.

Two goals in seven minutes from Greiser and Darcy Guttridge meant the Saints went into the first break with a 29-point lead.

Darebin started the second term the brighter, kicking two goals in the opening three minutes, but despite dominating possession for much of the term were kept at bay by a desperate Saints defence.

The Saints kept their composure and absorbed the pressure, switching the ball to the open side to set up Greiser for her second.

Despite being on the back foot for most of the quarter, the girls from Moorabbin went into the main break with a 22-point lead.

A clearing kick by Johnson into the forward 50 set up a free kick to Greiser early in the third.

Greiser, who is quickly emerging as a key forward in the competition, kicked her third of the afternoon to further extend their lead.

With the rain tumbling down, the Saints’ continued to press and set up well behind the ball, as Darebin struggled to get the ball into their forward half for most of the term.

The Saints went into the last break with a 33-point lead, but a frantic final term saw both sides slug it out for the last 20 minutes.

There were multiple inside-50s but the Saints could only add one behind to their tally, while Darebin could only add two behinds.

Head coach Peta Searle, who played and coached Darebin to multiple premierships, praised the team’s efforts especially in windy conditions.

“The first quarter was our best,” she said.

“I thought our tall forwards worked better today and got a bit more isolation, and Greiser kicked three which is pretty good in these conditions, and that's pretty good for a key forward.

“I think our structure behind the ball has been quite positive, and defensively we have stood up pretty well as we have done for most of the year."

Despite being forced to defend for most of the second quarter, Searle said there were plenty of positives.

“I thought our contest stuff was better in the second quarter to allow them to have less inside-50 entries to what they potentially could have had," she said.

“We scored against the wind and that's worth two or three goals, and we certainly had opportunities in the fourth quarter to score against the wind.”

The Saints take on Williamstown next weekend, with Searle expecting a tough affair.

“We will see what happens next week, as they have a pretty strong physical girl in the ruck.”
