St Kilda's new recruit Colm Begley stopped by the city this week to meet his Irish compatriots who are in Australia representing their country at the 2008 Homeless World Cup.

Held at Federation Square, 56 teams from around the world are battling it out to be crowned champions at this weekend's final. The event has been running since 2001 and is a heartwarming initiative that unites homeless people from all cultural and social backgrounds.

Begley arrived shortly after the Irish team defeated Italy in a penalty shootout and was quick to offer his congratulations. Ireland has been one of the form teams of the tournament, winning 4/4 and topping the initial group stage.

"It's great to see an event like this is so well supported," Begley said.

"You can tell how enthusiastic everyone here is and how they truly enjoy the experience and opportunity that has been given to them. I've been keeping my eye on their results and am proud to see the Irish boys dominating! Hopefully they can keep it up and I can see them play in the finals on the weekend."

Begley presented the team with a St Kilda jumper, had a kick around with the boys and demonstrated that he is certainly no slouch with the round ball!

The lads were clearly elated to meet Colm and chat about football, life in Ireland and their experience coming down under for this event.
