The Southern Saints’ quest for a maiden VFLW premiership continues this Saturday when they take on Geelong in Saturday's semi-final at GHMBA Stadium.

With momentum high following a hard-fought elimination final over Port Melbourne and the Cats on the back-foot after a narrow six-point defeat to Collingwood last weekend, the opportunity is there for the taking.

Having locked up sixth spot on the ladder, the Southern Saints travelled to ETU Stadium in the first week of the finals to take on the third-placed Port Melbourne.

Despite Port Melbourne taking in a slender six-point lead into the first break, Dale Robinson’s side took the momentum back to power to a comprehensive 28-point win.

Jess Matin's touch (20 disposals, seven inside-50s, two goals) was vital in the win, as was the forward presence of Tara Bohanna (two goals) and Gabriella De Angelis (one goal).

The trio were well-supported well by Alice Burke (15 disposals, 11 tackles), Hannah Stuart (18 disposals) and Tyanna Smith (16 disposals), who each were among their side's best by final siren.

Opposition Watch

Geelong will be looking to avenge last week’s loss to the undefeated Magpies and continue its push deep into the finals this Saturday.

The Cats fought tooth-and-nail against Collingwood at the Holden Centre but were unable to grab the lead as the Pies kept them at bay.

Despite keeping the home side scoreless in the final quarter, Geelong themselves could only manage two behinds as Collingwood ran out six-point victors.

Olivia Fuller was among the best for the Cats and dominated the ruck with 36 hit-outs, 22 disposals and six tackles, while Renee Garing had 19 disposals to go along with her 10 tackles.

After holding Geelong to just one goal in the first three quarters, the Southern Saints were ultimately overrun by their opposition's five-goal blitz – four of which were kicked in the last seven minutes – in the final term.

Alice Burke was her consistent self with 20 disposals and five tackles, while Claudia Whitfort led from the front with 13 disposals, 10 tackles.
