TERRY Milera had one of his best games for St Kilda last weekend, collecting a career-high 23 disposals along with seven marks and a goal in the win against Melbourne.

But more exciting than Milera’s ability to accumulate possessions – Saturday was the first time he had more than 20 in an AFL match – was the manner in which he used the ball. Milera played higher up the field than usual, and was able to use his pace to great effect, slicing through the middle of the ground and delivering the ball precisely into the forward line.

2013 has been a year in which Milera has learnt plenty, but not always at AFL level. The 25-year-old has played a number of matches for Sandringham, St Kilda’s VFL affiliate, in recent weeks.

Milera describes his time in the VFL as “a bit frustrating” but believes it has been a learning experience for him.

“When I went back to Sandy the coaches tried to get me to play on the wing more, so (against the Demons) I had a bit more of a run on the wing, which was good,” Milera says.

The 22-gamer has played as a small forward in most of his games with St Kilda so far, but is excited by the prospect of spending more time in the midfield.

“I played most of my SANFL days on the wing, so to come to AFL I probably need to build my endurance up to play a bit more on the wing, so that’s what I’m aiming for.”

Milera will be hoping to utilise his pace again this Sunday against Richmond at the MCG.

“It’s a big ground, so there’s plenty of room to move around,” Milera says. “Everyone loves playing on the G.”

While he would relish the chance to spend more time on a wing, Milera isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“I’ve been in and out of the team, so at the moment (my main goal) is probably just to keep my spot, and just play my role for the team, and contribute to the team week in, week out,” Milera says.

The 183cm Saint knows the key to maintaining his spot is to back up last week’s performance against the Tigers this Sunday.

“Consistency – that’s the main thing I need to aim for.”
