A four-goal final quarter to St Kilda young-gun Jack Billings has helped Sandringham to a hard-fought 20-point win against Frankston on Saturday.

Trailing by five points at the final break, Billings put on a master class along the half-forward line with his left foot proving lethal around goal.

“It’s been a long summer for all the senior boys and it was good to get a win against a quality side in Frankston,” Billings said.

“I had a better second half and I think I just got lucky and got on the end of a few.”

“The whole game I tried to focus on being on the move and trying to get my opponent one-on-one to make it harder for the defenders and I think I was able to do that.”

Billings was one of many Saints players to impress on Saturday, with Maverick Weller and Tom Lee also earning the praise of acting Sandringham coach Paul Hudson.

“I take my hat off to Maverick Weller, who was doing a job for us and really got us going in the last 10-15 minutes,” Hudson said.

“And for Tom Lee, I’m just pleased for his hard work over the past two weeks.”

“You don’t always get acknowledged for the competitiveness he’s shown and he finally got the rewards today.”

With the wind favouring the beach end of the ground, the game was broken down into offensive and defensive quarters, with 22 of the day’s 28 goals kicked towards the beach end.

Frankston, with the advantage of the wind to start the game, were well on top in the first quarter though failed to convert their chances, with inaccurate kicking in front of goal proving costly.

Sandringham, in contrast, was able to capitalise on their two quarters with the breeze, including an eight-goal-to-two second quarter that provided some breathing space in the form of a three-goal lead heading into the third quarter.

Despite Frankston having plenty of opportunities in the second half, the Zebras were able to stand tall in defense before running away with the game in the final quarter to secure Sandringham’s first win of the season.

“Straight kicking wins you matches, and that definitely proved true for us today,” Hudson said.

“Frankston definitely had their opportunities but I was pleased with how we fought out the match.”

Sandringham will next take on the Box Hill Hawks at 2pm Sunday 13 April at the Box Hill City Oval.
