SPENCER White will make his long-awaited AFL debut on Sunday evening.

The 19-year-old has booted nine goals in his last three matches for Sandringham, including a haul of five majors two weeks ago against Coburg.

PLAYER PROFILE: Spencer White

Yet despite his obvious goal-kicking ability, White’s role this weekend will be largely concerned with the defensive aspects of his game according to Alan Richardson.

"Spencer has been building and we think he is ready to come into the team,” said the first-year coach.

"We are not expecting miracles. There is a lot of talk about Spencer and he still has a lot to learn and work on, but we've told him to come in and compete, defend and go for his marks.

"Most of all we want him to give great effort. We're pleased he's getting the opportunity."

The early to middle stages of White’s 2014 campaign were riddled with various injuries and his form fluctuated as a result. But greater consistency in recent weeks, coupled with an improved defensive output, has allowed Richardson to hand the left-footer a debut against the in-form Tigers.

In other selection news, Clint Jones has been recalled for his first senior game since the last time these two teams met, in round 15, while Brodie Murdoch has also been named after impressing in the VFL last weekend.

"Clint has been a real professional since he has gone back to play for Sandringham and given his experience and his want to play, he's done everything asked of him,” Richardson said.

"Brodie has been in and out in recent times, but on the whole he gives us real versatility. We think long-term he is going to be a really good player for us."

James Gwilt and Josh Saunders have been omitted, while Shane Savage will miss after breaking his arm at training on Thursday morning.

Savage has enjoyed a considerable resurgence since round 14, averaging 22.6 disposals per outing in his new role at half-back.

"It's dissapointing for Sav and us because he's been in really good form in the back half of the year,” Richardson said.

"Unfortunately that's footy and these things happen sometimes. The good thing is that Shane will go into the break, knowing that he can really add to the team and we know that he will be a good player for us going forward.

Sam Dunell has been named as an emergency alongside young ruckman Lewis Pierce and Gwilt.
