ST KILDA will make at least two changes for this Saturday’s game against West Coast.

Nick Riewoldt has been ruled out already as a precaution following a sickening collision with Adelaide’s Brodie Smith, while Jack Sinclair will return to the rookie list this week with Seb Ross coming off the long-term injury list and due to play VFL.

These two vacancies will open the door for the likes of Tim Membrey, Blake Acres, Farren Ray and Tom Curren to push their claims for a senior spot.

Darren Minchington, Nathan Wright and Paddy McCartin may also come into consideration.

The fact McCartin was rested on the weekend will not affect his chances of a recall in round eight.

“It’s not as though he’s been excluded from the selection discussion he’s had a week off,” General Manager of Football Performance Jamie Cox said.

“He’s back now in full training to prepare for the week ahead.”

When Riewoldt returned to the senior team in round six, it was Membrey who made way. Now that St Kilda’s skipper is sidelined, Membrey appears to be the frontrunner to replace him.

“Tim looked dangerous all day and although his statistics didn’t reflect that, we were pleased with his output and positioning,” Paul Hudson said in his VFL review.

“It was also probably a bit difficult for Tim coming in and playing with some blokes he had never played with before. Tim finished with three goals and made the most of his chances.”

From a midfield and small forward perspective, Sinclair’s forced omission will open the door for another young Saint this weekend.

According to Hudson, Acres has been best afield the last two weeks for Sandringham.

While not in the mould of Sinclair, the 19-year-old’s versatility, form and adaptability may appeal to St Kilda’s selection committee.

“Blake was best on ground in my opinion with 30 disposals, eight marks and two goals,” Hudson said.

“His last fortnight has been outstanding and he’s become a really good player for us. He breaks the line and works really hard to get to a lot of contests.”

Curren and Minchington possess crumbing instincts that have been utilised at AFL level before and both players enjoyed stellar outings for Sandringham on Sunday.

Minchington, who is yet to play a senior game this season, had 20 possessions, kicked two goals and registered 13 tackles.

Curren had more touches than any other player on the ground and last played for St Kilda on Anzac Day against Carlton.

“Tommy had a game-high 31 possessions and contributed in all areas, especially in the clearance count,” Hudson said.

“His consistency and work rate across the four quarters was especially impressive.”

Another player who may come into calculations is 197-gamer Farren Ray, who returned to football for the Zebras on Saturday following a serious hamstring injury.

“Farren had 24 possessions playing mostly on the wing and a little bit at half-back,” he said.

“He got through the game unscathed after a long layoff and his touch was clean and effective.”

And there may be more than two changes this week too, with Leigh Montagna, Jarryn Geary and Jack Lonie all listed as ‘test’ on St Kilda’s injury list.
