MAVERICK Weller’s footballing evolution continued on Sunday with the 23-year-old booting a career-best three goals in the loss to Richmond at Etihad Stadium.

Deployed as a tagger for much of his career since arriving at the Saints from Gold Coast, Weller has shown versatility this season, kicking 11 goals in 13 games as a part-time forward.

“I’m enjoying it this year,” Weller said on Tuesday morning.

“I’ve been able to play multiple roles which is a strength of mine and I’m really enjoying it down forward.”

As for his preference, the 61-gamer suggested he is as happy in the engine room as he is closer to goal.

“I just love playing for the team and playing my role, and at the moment it is up forward,” he said.

“I do love tagging though. I love that physicality and combative side… I probably don’t have a preference either way.

Weller’s third goal on Sunday brought St Kilda back to within three goals of Richmond in the dying minutes of the game.

He gathered the ball in the midfield, took two bounces and finished from 50 in a bold style of football that has become a hallmark of the Saints brand in 2015.

His goal was nominated for the AFL’s Goal of the Year award.

“It was at the stage of the game where we were trying to keep the momentum so I chucked it under my arm and went for it,” he said.

“We had nothing to lose and I was pretty fortunate that it came off. I’m pretty quick and once I got out there and there was nobody in front of me, I knew there wasn’t long left and went for it.”

When asked whether it was the best of his 17 AFL goals, Weller conceded it “probably was.”
