PADDY McCartin’s performance against Melbourne on Sunday showed his significant potential, according to AFL greats Matthew Lloyd and Gary Lyon.

The pair, who are now prominent media figures, booted 1352 goals between them for Essendon and Melbourne in careers spanning 15 seasons.

Before McCartin was drafted, Lloyd saw him up close at the AIS-Academy as an assistant coach.

Speaking on Footy Classified, five-time All-Australian Lloyd suggested McCartin’s attack on the footy was the best he has seen in a young player.

“His competitiveness is fantastic,” Lloyd said.

“I’ve come through the junior ranks with Paddy and I’ve never seen a guy know how to use his body and be so aggressive for such a young man, which is brilliant to see.

“It was his performance in blustery conditions that was so impressive. I think he needs a huge pre-season to get his body in better shape than what it is now.”

Lyon agreed and urged fans to be patient with McCartin.

“This is a timely reminder for everyone to take a breath on this,” Lyon said.

“The kid got taken with the number one pick for a reason and you saw it on the weekend, it was so exciting.”

McCartin took nine marks, booted one goal and registered six inside 50s in St Kilda’s 37-point win over Melbourne.
