KEY position player Tom Lee will have surgery on his ankle on Monday, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

The 24-year-old, who has created a niche for himself at full-back this year for Sandringham, has also been placed on St Kilda's long-term injury list.

He injured his ankle earlier in the season playing VFL and has been managing it all year.

The recovery period is 12 weeks and he is expected to be fully fit for the start of pre-season and suffer no ongoing ankle complications.

Lee has played 13 senior games and booted 18 goals since arriving at St Kilda in November 2012.

He is contracted until the end of the 2016 season.
