ST KILDA defender Sam Gilbert has signed a new contract ahead of the Saints’ final game of the season.

The 29-year-old has penned a two-year deal that will see him tied to the club until at least the end of 2017 and most likely see him finish his career as a one-club player.

The signing is the latest in a series of key contract announcements ahead of the 2016 season. In recent weeks midfielder David Armitage, defender Sean Dempster and ruckmen Tom Hickey and Jason Holmes have all confirmed their commitment to the club by committing to new deals.

Coach Alan Richardson recently penned a deal that will see him remain as senior coach until at least the end of 2018, while midfielder Jack Steven signed a five-year deal at the start of the season.

Richardson said Gilbert would continue to bring leadership and playing experience to St Kilda’s young group.

“We have an exciting group at the club now and a lot of young players basically starting out on their AFL journeys. They can learn a lot from the examples set by Sam,” Richardson told SAINTS.com.au.

“The persistence and determination he has shown in coming back from long-term injury to re-establish himself as a key part of our team is a testament to his character.

“It took him a little while to get back to full form and fitness following his injury but, over the past few weeks, he has reminded everyone of what a talent he is.”

Gilbert played in the 2009 and 2010 Grand Finals - finishing third in the best and fairest in 2010. He was an All-Australian nominee the previous year.

Gilbert said he was feeling as positive as ever after an impressive return to the senior team from a persistent foot injury that has seen him play in defence, the wing and recently in the centre square.

“I’m relishing playing the roles the coaching staff gives me and after a bit of time on the sidelines, I’m enjoying my football as much as I ever have,” Gilbert said.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to be involved for at least the next two years and seeing what this team can achieve.

“Obviously there has been a lot of improvement right across the board at the club in 2015 and I am very excited about what is ahead of us.”

Gilbert has played 156 games since debuting in 2006, including 10 this year.
