This year was a massive improvement. From where we were last year, it took us a bit of time to get used to the game plan and a new coach and all that sort of stuff. But what the fans saw this year was more of the way we want to play.

Everyone committed to our game plan over the last pre-season. We had a huge focus on it all summer.

The coaches gave us belief that we could go quick and really take the game on. It didn’t matter about skill error too much, it was more about being bold and aggressive. Defensively it was a similar mentality, to come forward off your man and back ourselves at every opportunity.

This style of play will hold us in good stead. From an offensive perspective, we will keep trying to break teams open and play fast and attacking footy. That’s our brand.

We have a lot of young kids so we will not get it right every time, but the more we train for it and try to implement it in games, the better we will be in the long term.

2015 reflections: Maverick Weller

Sean Dempster keeps getting better and better. It doesn’t surprise me, but every year he develops his game and becomes a better player. Being so close with Sean down back has allowed me to learn off him and watch him work to improve. He’s a great role model for us all. He’s fit, he’s strong and his kicking improves heaps. He took the game on a bit more as well.

My year was similar to the team. It was a big improvement on last year but I still have a long way to go. I got a lot fitter over the pre-season and with the way Richo wants us to play, it suits my natural attributes of running and kicking.  I really enjoy playing that way.

I spent a bit of time on the wing this year. Hopefully next year I can continue to push up the field and help out. I’m also happy down back so would be more than happy to continue doing that. Whatever the team needs, I’m happy to do.

I felt myself improve as a leader this year given how young the group is. I’ve played 80 odd games now so I need to show some direction. I’ll keep building my leadership skills and it’s important that I help translate the message from the older guys to the young ones.

I’m looking forward to spending time with my three kids over the break. Boston, Henry and Phillipa are their names. My brother is getting married in November as well which will be good.

Having a young family helps my footy. There are times when I don’t get enough sleep, but that is to be expected and just part of being a parent I think. At the end of the day it all works well.
