St Kilda small defender Jarryn Geary will need to prove his fitness at Thursday’s main training session before being deemed fit to face Greater Western Sydney at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Geary, 27, was the only medical concern to emerge from St Kilda’s three-point loss to Hawthorn in Tasmania, after the reliable backman was concussed in the final quarter and took no further part in the game.

“A disappointing loss to the Hawks on the weekend, but fortunately only the one injury issue to come from the game and that was Jarryn Geary’s concussion late in the game,” St Kilda GM – Football Performance Jamie Cox told saints.com.au on Tuesday afternoon.

“The good news is he is recovering well, he seems to have no real affects now and has passed a couple of the early protocols. He’s got another step to go and will have to train well on Thursday, but he’s tracking well.”

Emerging players Luke Dunstan (hamstring) and Jimmy Webster (quad) were late casualties from the gutsy Round 3 victory over Collingwood due to soft tissue issues at training last week.

Cox said both Dunstan and Webster have recovered well and could potentially return to face the Giants if they prove their fitness at training on Thursday.

“Leading into the Hawthorn game we actually lost a couple of young players during the week, probably as some ill effects from the week before,” Cox said.

“Luke Dunstan and Jimmy Webster were both unavailable for the Hawthorn due to some minor leg strains.

“The good news is they’re both rehabbing well. Again, they’ll have to train well on Thursday but could well be in selection for this week, which would be a good outcome.”

Rookie pair Nick O’Kearney and Brenton Payne remain a week away from returning from arm and shin injuries respectively. Cox revealed first-year midfielder O’Kearney has accelerated through his rehabilitation and is ahead of schedule.

“Both O’Kearney and Payne are rehabbing well,” Cox said.

“Nick O’Kearney in particular has had his return date brought forward a little bit. They’re both now probably a week away and tracking really well.”

The only current medium-term injury concern at Linen House Centre is rebounding defender Dylan Roberton, who is still a few weeks away from returning from the knee injury he suffered against Collingwood.

“Dylan’s going really well, but he’s at least three weeks ago with a Round 7 date pencilled in for him, all going well,” Cox said.
