With St Kilda talls Nick Riewoldt and Paddy McCartin likely to return from injury this weekend, Alan Richardson and the match committee are set to make some changes to the side that comfortably beat Carlton prior to the bye.

Riewoldt (knee) and McCartin (concussion) both missed the 32-point win over the Blues in Round 12, but after receiving the extra week off due to the timing of the bye, the pair only needs to get through training on Thursday to be cleared to face Geelong on Saturday night.

Pressure for spots in the midfield and for small forwards is fierce at the moment with a handful of players pressing their cases for senior selection in the VFL.

Like St Kilda, Sandringham had the week off last weekend. However, prior to the bye round, a trio of Jacks put their hands up for a recall to the senior side.

Jack Lonie hasn’t played senior football since the Saints disappointing trip to Perth in Round 8, but after booting 5.0 from 15 possessions in a best on ground performance against Essendon, the livewire forward is firmly in the selection mix. The 20-year-old has kicked nine goals in three VFL games since being dropped after the loss to West Coast.

Highly rated young gun Jack Billings responded strongly to his omission prior to the Carlton game, collecting a team-high 28 possessions as he put his best foot forward to make a swift return back into the Saints 22.

Jack Sinclair was also one of the best players on the ground against the Bombers, putting his hand up for another senior opportunity after picking up 27 disposals and two goals, to go with a game-high 12 tackles, as he blended his offensive and defensive game together.

Rebounding defender Brodie Murdoch was left out of the side that eased past Carlton a fortnight ago and didn’t play at any level that weekend after being held over as the senior emergency. The South Australian played two games between Round 10 and 11 – his only two games of 2016.
