Experienced leader Leigh Montagna has endorsed the clubs leadership position, suggesting there are quality options to replace Nick Riewoldt if the Saints choose to head down that path at seasons end.

Riewoldt, St Kilda’s longest serving captain, has signalled that he could hand over the reins at the end of the year if it’s in the clubs best interests to do so.

Montagna believes small defender Jarryn Geary and game-breaking midfielder Jack Steven are two candidates that could step in to the role, while hard running wingman Jack Newnes is a younger option who has impressed the dual All Australian.

“We’ve got a few (candidates to replace Riewoldt),” Montagna told Triple M’s The Hot Breakfast on Thursday morning.

“Jarryn Geary is probably next in line and he's been super. If you want to go younger than him Jack Steven this year has really developed as a leader on and off the field.

“Jack Newnes is someone who I think is a bit younger again, who’s got terrific leadership qualities.

“It might be a good idea while ‘Rooey’ still plays to hand it down. But it’s up to ‘Rooey’ and the club, they’ve done that every year for the last three or four years.

“‘Rooey’s’ always said whatever’s in the best interests of the club and they’ll do that again.”

St Kilda faces third placed Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, looking to shift ahead of the win-loss ledger.
