St Kilda debutant Ben Long described his first game as a surreal experience and something that will be etched into his memory forever, after he played a role in the Saints’ 14-point win over Collingwood on Sunday.

Just like he did in his brief appearance in the JLT Community Series, the 19-year-old made an impact with his pressure in the forward half, amassing 45.1 pressure points – the fourth most of any Saint – and eight disposals.

“It was surreal, the build up to the game today. Running out with the team through the banner I just tried to soak it all in,” Long told saints.com.au after his first appearance for St Kilda on Easter Sunday.

“It’s the most people I’ve ever played in front of; I was nervous but excited at the same time.

Monday Wash-Up: Round 4 v Collingwood

“It was great to get the win. It’s going to be a great memory for me and I won’t forget it. To play my first game and get the win against Collingwood is a great feeling.”

After featuring against Carlton in the pre-season as well as a seven-game stint at Footscray at the end of last year, which culminated in a premiership, Long said he would need to get used to the step up in pace and physicality.

“It was another step up for me. I think the pace was something I’m still trying to get used to and the bigger, stronger bodies. I’m building my confidence,” he said.

“I’ll get a few games under my belt and build my confidence so I can take the game on a bit more.”

When asked what goals he has set for his maiden season at Linen House Centre, the Northern Territory product said he just wants to build his confidence in 2017 and play his role for the Saints as they pursue a return to September for the first time since 2011.

“To keep going at training and build my confidence. Getting a few more game under my belt,” he said.

“The focus at the club is to make finals this year and I want to make an impact on that and be a confidence player for St Kilda.”
