St Kilda General Manager Football Performance Jamie Cox has confirmed Darren Minchington will undergo surgery this week to repair ligaments in his ankle.

The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks after sustaining the injury in Sandringham’s loss to Coburg at Trevor Barker Beach Oval in Round 10 of the VFL.

Cox said the club was hopeful Minchington could still make an impact late in the season.

“Unfortunately Darren hurt his ankle while playing for Sandringham last weekend,” Cox said.

“Subsequent scans have shown he needs surgery to correct the issue but we're hopeful he can get back before the end of the season and still have an impact this year."

Minchington has played five senior games this season with his last appearance coming in the loss to the Western Bulldogs in Round 10.
