After a slump in the middle of the season, St Kilda is building towards a return to September for the first time since 2011, says mobile key forward Tim Membrey.

St Kilda hasn’t featured in the final month of the season since they exited in the first week of the finals six years ago, in a game only six current Saints played in – David Armitage, Sam Gilbert, Nick Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna, Jarryn Geary and Jack Steven.

“We’re building at the right time. We’re starting to play positive footy at a good time of the year so hopefully we’re there in September and can play strong footy,” Membrey told saints.com.au after Saturday night’s 67-point win.

“We’ve been building for the last three weeks, won some games, but our best footy was still to come and tonight we took a big step forward. It was a really solid four-quarter effort.”

Membrey, who is set to come under scrutiny from the Match Review Panel following a collision with Richmond defender Dylan Grimes, produced his best performance of the year on Saturday night, finishing with 5.0 from 11 disposals and nine marks – five contested and five inside 50.

“It was good to get on the end of a few and to kick straight. We’ve had a bit of trouble not kicking straight in the past so it was good to get on the end of a couple,” Membrey said.

Membrey described the support for the second edition of Maddie’s Match as massive after a sea of purple swept through Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

“Obviously that has been massive. All the guys have gotten behind it this week. It’s a great cause,” he said.

“It was good to see so many fans there tonight wearing purple and hopefully we raised a lot of money for it.”
